Located 290 k.m west of alexandria and 230 k.m from libya,The distance from Cairo to Matrouh is 524 km.It lies on a bay on the Mediterranean
The governorate has 8 headquarters which are: El-Hamam, El-Alameen, El-Dabaa, Matrouh, El-Negilaa, Berany, El-Saloum and Siwa. And from the most popular acitivities in the governorate are: grazing and planting some important crops such as Olive, wheat, watermelon, figs, dates and barleys.
Its beach is famous for its white soft sands and calm transparent waters, for the bay is protected from the high seas by a series of rocks forming a natural wave-breaker, with a small opening to allow light vessels in.
This beach dates back to the days of Alexander, the Macedonian, when it was known as "Paraetonium" and also as "Amunia". It said that Alexander the Great stopped there during his historical expedition to pay tribute, and sacrifice, to the god Amun, at Siwa, so that he becomes Amun's son and his rule be a historical continuation of the pharaohs.

What to visit there
Monument and Tourist Sites :-

1- Coptic Church:
This was established in the beginning of the Coptic age, in addition to some caves having ancient drawings.
2- Romile hiding:
This is rocky caves that Romile used to put his military plans. This hiding became a military museum.
3- Cleopatra Bath:

it is located at the top of the hills. It consists of a rock that lies 50 meters far from the coast, you can get there by a boat, walking or by a car.
4- The British Cemetery:

Thousands upon thousands of rock-hewn tombstones stand straight rows amidst a fenced garden.
5- The German Cemetery:
It is a fortress like memorial that was built on a high overlooking the
sea.
6- The Italian Cemetery:
It is a high tower fort standing on a high hill. The walls of the building are
covered with marble.

Beaches :-
1- Agibaa beach:

that is located 28 km west Marsaa Matrouh, it is distinguished by its numerous natural caves and beautiful sites.By the way the word agibaa an arabic word means (strange)in English and it is really strange beach !!
2- El-Abyad beach:

that is located 30 km west Matrouh. It is more beautiful than Marsaa Matrouh coast.
3- Raas El-Hikma beach:

it is located 85 km east Matrouh and it is famous by its quiet coast
4- Cleopatra Beach (Lover Rock):

it was famous by this names and history said that was the place where Cleopatra had the affair with Anthony.
